Many significant changes involve behind-the-scenes elements, but the most instantly noticeable advancements relate to the appearance of these games. An industry that began with oscilloscopes and tiny pixels has blossomed into a creative environment that allows games to look just as incredible as the big-budget summer blockbuster movies from which they draw inspiration.

However, with this technological boom comes several challenges, including the game asset creation process. With game budgets skyrocketing, few developers and artists have either the time or resources needed to create every character or environmental detail on their own.

Thankfully, a viable solution is within reach. These days, many artists look to procedural content generation to assist with creating art for video games. Still in its relative infancy, procedural game design has become an industry staple and it’s rapidly accelerating as the technology improves that powers it.

Understanding Procedural Generation in Games

Procedural generation may sound like a gaming buzzword, but it’s far from new. In fact, many of the most popular games of the last decade (including the likes of Minecraft and 20XX) have used procedural generation to great effect. 

Think of procedural generation as an invaluable tool that maximizes the efficiency of the game art pipeline. Of course, no technology is perfect — and while the advantages of procedural generation are numerous, a few pitfalls must be avoided when opting for procedurally generated content and art assets.

What Is Procedural Generation?

Procedural generation refers to any in-game assets created by software programs with specific guidelines, parameters and algorithms. One familiar example could be a dungeon with dozens of different levels. Each level will have a minimum number of specific elements dictated by the guidelines, while the rest of the design can be left up to the software. 

Benefits and Drawbacks of Procedural Systems

Many compelling advantages encourage creatives to leverage procedural generation systems in-game environment design. Perhaps most notable in today’s fast-paced industry: the potential to save time. Without procedural generation, it becomes necessary to design and create every level manually. Though this manual approach can deliver richer and more textured designs, tight deadlines make this strategy difficult to maintain. 

Designers appreciate that they now enjoy the option to produce dozens of levels, especially given the content-hungry nature of this demanding field. The caveat? If the core guidelines and parameters that serve to instruct the software aren’t up to par, the results can be lackluster, and worst of all, no fun to play.

Every artist and developer strives to find the sweet spot in which game content can be procedurally generated while still looking and feeling as though it was meticulously crafted by creative visionaries. 

Popular Games Using Procedural Generation

Procedural generation entered the gaming industry decades ago. One of the most notable examples involves the 1980 title Rogue — a dungeon crawler in which no two play-throughs looked exactly the same. While the game was never a major financial success, its influence lives on to this day, as it has spawned entire genres of imitators known as “Roguelikes” and “Roguelites.”

Environments should allow players to reach their destinations without feeling lost or confused. No Man’s Sky

Developer Hello Games faced many obstacles on the path to unleashing the epic space exploration game No Man’s Sky. Promises of a nearly infinite number of galaxies and planets made it one of the most eagerly anticipated releases of its generation. The initial reactions were quite negative — due, in part, to the feeling of repetition players encountered while navigating the core gameplay experience. 

This served as a stark warning for developers: While procedural generation can create unlimited environments and assets, the gameplay loop must feel rewarding. This calls for new challenges on occasion. Remarkably, Hello Games managed to right the ship and turn No Man’s Sky into a massive success with help from several major updates that refined and added to the experience.

Dead Cells and Spelunky

Although No Man’s Sky has shown what procedural generation can accomplish with big, open worlds, a few notable examples highlight the value of this method within smaller environments. Derek Yu’s Spelunky took the roguelike formula and turned it into one of the biggest indie gaming success stories of all time. The procedurally generated caves contain a multitude of challenging enemies and obstacles, delivering an addictive gameplay loop that had players hooked from the beginning. 

Perhaps the finest example of handcrafted art assets combined with procedurally generated levels is Dead Cells — the 2018 action game that combines unpredictable elements with the popular Metroidvania style of exploration gameplay. From humble beginnings inside a French apartment, the developers at Motion Twin found the perfect blend of environmental storytelling combined with tight, fast-paced action, all while using random number generators to great effect.

Steve Filby (who worked on Dead Cells at Motion Twin) describes a true formula for success: “Basically, we use about 50 percent procedurally generated and 50 percent hand-crafted content in the game. Having said that, we’ve still got a lot of work to do on the generator until we’ll be 100 percent satisfied with the result.”

(LAKEWOOD, COLORADO) – John Musker, acclaimed director of “Moana,” “Hercules,” “Aladdin,” “The Princess and the Frog,” and “The Little Mermaid,” is joining this year’s Frames + Games Festival on Thursday, April 24, and Friday, April 25 at Rocky Mountain College of Art + Design. The Annual Frames + Games Film Festival highlights and awards the work of RMCAD’s animation and game art students. 

As part of the two-day festival, John Musker will provide RMCAD students, faculty, and interested members of the community with a keynote speech and signing event on Thursday, April 24, from 1:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. MT. The acclaimed writer, producer, and director will share his insights from working in the animation industry for more than 40 years, in a speech that will be available in person at RMCAD’s Mary Harris Auditorium.

The next day, Friday, April 25, the festival’s doors open at 4:00 p.m. and will include food, drinks, and game demos. The festival screening and award show will be hosted in the Mary Harris Auditorium and online from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. MT. All members of the RMCAD community and the public are invited to join this free presentation of student submissions. All works will be considered by a panel of judges in one of the following categories: Long Form Animation, Short Form Animation, Animatic, Game Demo, Computer Graphics, and Alumni Work. In addition to his keynote speech, John Musker will also be in attendance at the screening and award ceremony.

“The Annual Frames + Games Film Festival is the pinnacle of exhibition for our animation and game art students. It’s a great opportunity to share their grasp of these mediums and their expansive imaginations,” shared Michelle Kelley, RMCAD’s Animation program lead and co-festival head. “We are beyond proud to host someone with a body of work such as John Musker’s. An extremely large facet of game art is one that is often overlooked. Game art texturing holds a crucial role within the art discipline, and has the ability to impact not only the performance of a game but its storytelling and immersion. Through a variety of techniques, artists have the opportunity to create unique and realistic environments stemming from their wildest imaginations. Done well, a video game’s textures can utterly transform its world, successfully submerging its audience in its narrative and creating a genuinely deep, first-person experience for its players. 

The Basics of Texturing in Game Art

Game art texturing is the process of adding realistic details, colors, and complex surfaces to a 3D model in order to give the model realistic and lifelike qualities. It involves mapping and creating textures, such as wood grain, metal reflections, fabric folds, or skin blemishes, onto 3D surfaces to make them appear more realistic. Texturing is a critical step in game art development and animation that helps to enhance the visual depth, immersion, and storytelling of the game. 

Types of Textures Used in Games

Texturing can be completed through a variety of different techniques, including painting, photography, 3D sculpting, procedural generation, displacement, UV mapping, and physical based rendering (PBR). Which technique to use is entirely up to the designer’s preferences and their visual needs and goals of their project. When deciding which technique to use, it is important to keep in mind each techniques’ strengths, weaknesses, and the type of structure or model of an object. 

Techniques for Crafting Realistic Textures

There are a very large variety of texturing techniques that artists can choose from when creating their games. Different types of techniques are going to produce a variety of different outcomes and effects. It is important to consider the type of model that is being used and the desired appearance that needs to be created when deciding on a technique. 

Hand-Painted Textures

Hand-painting in game art is a detail-oriented technique in which artists use digital tools to replicate the look and feel of traditional brush strokes. Typically used in Photoshop, Mari, or Substance Painter, this technique involves deliberate, meticulous strokes and is often used in character design and product visualization.

Image-Based Texturing

Image-based texturing, also known as photogrammetry, uses pre-existing photos and images to produce textures. This technique helps to more easily and realistically produce materials such as stone, metal, and wood. However, it can make editing or adjusting difficult, as it can lead to distortion of the original image when applying it to a 2D or 3D model.

Procedural Texturing

Procedural texturing involves applying mathematical functions and algorithms to create textures that might be more difficult to create. Due to this technique being formula-based, it allows for significant changes to be made with relative ease and speed and immediately updated. Additionally, formulas can be easily reused or replicated for different assets. This is typically utilized with objects such as clouds, water, or fire. 

Tools and Software for Creating Textures

Autodesk Mudbox

Coming highly recommended by 3D texturing artists worldwide, Autodesk Mudbox is known for its user-friendly UI, intuitive tools, and plethora of tutorials. One of its important tools is its retopology tool, which allows users to create clean polygon meshes from scanned or imported data. This process ensures a seamless texturing process, and once completed, artists can paint their created textures directly onto their digital model. 

Adobe Photoshop

It should come as no surprise that Adobe Photoshop functions as a top-notch tool for game art texturing. As a fairly easy and effective tool, artists can easily make stunning custom 2D textures within Photoshop using things like the painting and adjustment tools. After which, artists can save their textures in PNG format and export them to their preferred modeling software. 

ZBrush

For artists looking to create high-resolution texture details and texture streaming, ZBrush comes highly recommended. ZBrush allows objects to be sketched first using the software’s PolyPaint technology, and then artists can add a texture map to which the sketch can be transferred.  A large draw to this software is that it does not require users to purchase any expensive graphics cards to complete the process. Other helpful tools within the software include Crease Edge UV Unwrap, Dual Alphas and Textures, MorphUV, Texture and PolypaintAdjust by Color, DecoBrush, and Zcolor. 

Texturing Plugins and Add-ons

Certain plugins and add-ons can make a big difference in your game art texturing endeavors. If there are particular aspects of a software that intrigue you, but some that you find are missing, it might be worth exploring different options for plugins and add-ons, they might just have a missing function or tool that you’ve been hoping for. 

Autodesk Mudbox Add-ons

Mudbox provides direct support for Utility Plugins, which allow for tasks such as: Read / Write / Create Texture Maps, and Sample Texture Values. Through Sample Texture Values, Mudbox will extract data from a 3D model surface in order to create a new texture map as a 2D surface. Read/Write/Create Texture Maps allows for a variety of texturing tools, such as importing external files to apply as texture maps, and enhancing the appearance of 3D models through color, patterns, and other details. 

Adobe Photoshop Add-ons

Add-ons like Texture Anarchy, Machine Wash Deluxe, and Filter Forge work to help generate different textures within Photoshop itself. These plugins use mathematical algorithms to generate and extend textures infinitely, helping artists create seamless realistic, creative textures straight from their most creative imaginations. 

ZBrush Add-ons

NanoTile Textures and Matcap Baker are plugins available within ZBrush to assist in texture creations. NanoTile allows artists to create tiling textures using NanoMeshes, InsertMeshes, and sculptable WrapMode plans within the software. Once the effect has been created, it can be seamlessly converted to a tiling texture map. 

Matcap Baker allows artists to bake materials directly to a texture map within the software using UV Coordinates and Subdivisions. This tool will use displacement mapping to capture the sculptural details, thus allowing it to be baked onto a 2D texture map. 

Optimizing Textures for Game Engines

Balancing Quality and Performance

While texture is a critical part of game development, it can quickly become the biggest drain on one’s graphics processing unit (GPU). With only a finite amount of GPU memory and a variety of possibilities in terms of a player’s computer quality, it’s up to the artist to be responsible for optimizing their game art textures quality and keeping in mind how they use their memory, resolution, and format of their textures. 

PBR (Physically-Based Rendering) Workflow

Physically-Based Rendering (PBR), sometimes known as Physically-Based Shading (PBS), significantly impacts the final quality of game art textures. This involves methods of game art texturing that exhibit a realistic and accurate representation of how light interacts with different objects. PBR and PBS can be used separately in discussing lighting versus shading of 3D models, but both are important to the process of accurately and realistically rendering models and textures. 

When working with PBR, artists must keep in mind the angle at which an object is being viewed, its base reflectivity, and the type of surface of an object. A broader knowledge of these concepts will take time and practice, but will significantly help to deepen an artist’s understanding of the technical perspective, as well as their ability to create hyper-realistic textures.

Recent games that exemplify cutting-edge texturing technology include the post-apocalyptic world of The Last of Us Part II, the neon-soaked streets of Cyberpunk 2077, and the rugged wilderness of Red Dead Redemption 2. Accessibility is a growing priority in the artistic community. Across mediums, artists share a desire to open powerful experiences to a wider audience. This means building accessibility into the creative process, but without compromising the overall aesthetics or meaning of any given piece.

This balance can sometimes be difficult to strike within the vast world of gaming, where intricate details and expansive worldbuilding coalesce with a rapid pace of gameplay. These elements could easily cause problems for gamers with a range of impairments, including visual, auditory, cognitive, or mobility concerns.

These issues should not prevent players from enjoying the visual appeal and deeper meaning of game art. Thankfully, by drawing on universal design principles, today’s gaming leaders can cultivate experiences that welcome a wider variety of players.

Understanding Accessibility in Game Art

Accessibility represents far more than a gaming buzzword. This term references the need for gaming experiences that can be seamlessly navigated and enjoyed by a wide range of users, regardless of whether they have physical or cognitive disabilities or whether they deal with various visual or hearing impairments.

Accessibility consultant Ian Hamilton explains that misconceptions have long plagued this practice, that the effort to boost accessibility is “expensive and involves diluting down your vision.” Speaking to the influence of accessibility, Hamilton explains, “The decisions we make as designers, developers and content producers have way more impact on people’s lives than most people working in the industry [realize].”

What Is Accessibility in Gaming?

Applied to gaming, accessibility determines how easily various users can understand and control games. The goal of accessibility in gaming is to make these experiences widely available and enjoyable, but without hampering the overall vision or quality of top games.

Speaking broadly to the value of accessibility, the National Center on Accessible Educational Materials (AEM) explains that materials and technologies qualify as accessible when a person with a disability can “acquire the same information [and] engage in the same interactions…with substantially equivalent ease of use” as an individual without a disability. Beyond this, materials are only deemed accessible if users with disabilities can engage in said experiences in an “equally effective, equally integrated” manner.

Common Challenges Faced by Players

Players face many challenges that prevent them from fully embracing otherwise promising game experiences. Insights from AbleGamers suggest that over 46 million players have disabilities, although many others also struggle to navigate games regardless of disability status. Many conditions or disabilities can impact gaming, including:

  • Visual and auditory impairments
  • Neurodiversity, such as autism spectrum disorder
  • Paralysis or other mobility impairments
  • Vestibular issues such as motion sickness

Inclusive Design Principles for Game Art

Accessible game art draws heavily on the principles of inclusive design, driving the clarity and adaptability of gaming resources and experiences. The ultimate goal is to create game art that a wide range of players can enjoy but that also elevates the overall gaming experience.

A report in the Journal of Consumer Psychology clarifies that inclusive design “considers the needs and capabilities of the whole population” to prevent a potential mismatch between what designed materials promise and what audiences or users actually experience. No formula can reliably guarantee inclusivity in something as subjective as game art, but these principles help:

Using High-Contrast Visuals

Contrast has long brought compelling visuals to the gaming experience, using purposeful differences in color, brightness or other visual elements to ensure that central features stand out. This delivers not only dynamic aesthetics, but also an element of visual clarity that could be extra important for users with disabilities.

Color contrast, for example, can help players distinguish between different elements, although this alone will not be sufficient, given the realities of color vision deficiencies. Edge definition offers further contrast, preventing key elements from blending into the background. Some games offer specially designed high-contrast modes to boost visibility for user interface (UI) components or environmental hazards.

Color Accessibility

High contrast can help, but additional features may be needed to bring compelling visuals to users with color vision impairments. Screen-wide color filters cannot be expected to address this problem in its entirety. Rather, color accessibility should be built into the structure of the game.

Patterns, shapes, and symbols can all be useful for revealing crucial details or establishing a compelling aesthetic. Features such as heads-up display (HUD) elements can prevent games from relying entirely on colors to convey important information.

Readable Typography

Typography plays a more significant role in the gaming experience than many people realize. This helps to guide users through the gaming experience while reinforcing core themes. Unfortunately, text also has the potential to clutter the gaming environment or simply confuse players. Therein lies the need for legible typography, complete with sans-serif fonts and high contrast. Adjustable text can provide additional assistance, but ideally, most players will easily make sense of the standard typography.

Tools and Technologies for Accessible Game Art

While the previously discussed principles can provide a valuable blueprint to promote inclusivity in all stages of game design, additional tools may be needed to confirm that developers actually live up to their promises of providing accessible gaming experiences. Beyond this, assistive technologies can be provided to address any lingering accessibility concerns that cannot be overcome through design alone.

Accessibility Testing Tools

Accessibility testing determines whether game designers achieve their stated intentions of making games accessible to (and enjoyable for) a wide range of players. This is one of the most effective strategies for identifying and addressing accessibility gaps.

Prior to testing, it is essential to consider game accessibility guidelines (GAG) to establish benchmarks. From there, developers can use a range of testing tools and strategies (such as user experience testing platforms or color blindness simulators) to determine how different types of users might navigate or enjoy games, especially when accessible features or modes are enabled. Similarly, tests can be performed using screen readers to confirm that text remains easy to read and understand.

Assistive Technologies in Gaming

Assistive technologies can help overcome difficult-to-address accessibility concerns that might otherwise stand in the way of desired aesthetics or gameplay mechanics. From eye-tracking technologies to strategically designed joysticks, many exciting assistive options are available. These should not be pursued in lieu of inclusive design but can certainly support an accessible gaming experience.

Examples of Accessibility in Game Art

Games can transport players to worlds they never dreamed of visiting, but nothing can snap someone out of the fantasy quicker than a visual disruption that ruins the experience. Thankfully, many developers have integrated impressive accessibility options into their games. Promising examples reveal the creative possibilities for bringing accessibility to the forefront.

Games With Exceptional Visual Accessibility Features

Many exciting games reveal that accessibility does not have to come at the cost of aesthetics or gameplay quality. In fact, well-designed accessibility features in games can enhance these elements. Examples of games that stand out as accessibility leaders include:

  • The Last of Us Part II. Naughty Dog serves as a leading advocate for accessibility in games, and they went all out to provide a fantastic gameplay experience for as many people as possible with The Last of Us Part II. Several in-game settings can be altered to adjust heads-up displays and other user interface elements. Three colorblind options are also available, offering settings for Protanopia, Deuteranopia and Tritanopia.
  • Celeste. With a reputation as one of the toughest platformers around, Celeste goes out of its way to make sure that challenges feel fair. This game looks downright incredible while played in photosensitive mode, which disables screen flashes and other visual effects that some users could find troublesome.

Studios Leading the Charge in Accessibility

Accessibility is beginning to feel less like a game-by-game pursuit and, instead, a widespread effort. Many studios consistently demonstrate an emphasis on inclusive design, revealed through consistently accessible offerings.

  • Naughty Dog. The studio behind the Uncharted and Last of Us franchises put an emphasis on accessibility from the beginning of the design process. Senior producer Sam Thompson explains that the “most important rule in inclusive design is to start the process as early as possible during development.” This ensures that the gameplay experience always feels natural and that accessibility options don’t come off as last-minute additions.
  • Ubisoft. Industry leader Ubisoft has an entire team devoted to ensuring that games are as accessible as possible. This is best evidenced by cutting-edge games such as Assassin’s Creed: Mirage, promising a wide range of accessibility options to suit many types of players.
  • Microsoft. For over a decade, Microsoft has prioritized accessibility within the culture of Xbox. The Xbox Adaptive Controller, released in 2018, was a first-of-its-kind device dedicated to bringing console gaming to a broader audience. Since then, the Xbox brand has championed several accessible games, such as Gears 5 and Halo Infinite. Another standout is the Forza franchise of racing games, which makes excellent use of spatial audio.

Collaboration for Inclusive Game Art

Inclusive game art represents a collaborative effort, with many talented professionals joining forces to ensure that games achieve high standards for accessibility. While in-depth training can help, even the most conscientious game designers may have gaps in knowledge that make it difficult to touch on the full range of accessibility concerns. Thankfully, many excellent resources are available.

Engaging With Accessibility Consultants

Accessibility consultants provide a wealth of insight into the oft-missed concerns that can make games feel less inviting to diverse populations. These experts can perform in-depth assessments or otherwise offer guidance to ensure that game designers and developers make the most of accessibility opportunities. Consultants may also guide the user testing process, helping developers gather first hand feedback from a variety of players.

Involving the Community

Whenever possible, developers should seek insights from the gaming public. This can reveal both strengths and deficits as they relate to accessibility. This effort may begin with surveys, which provide a chance to express personal experiences and preferences. Developers may seek more in-depth insights via focus groups or by conducting interviews. User testing completes this process, helping to bridge the gap between design theories or principles and the actual experience of navigating a particular game.

Balancing Accessibility with Aesthetic Goals

Gaming accessibility skeptics worry that the inclusive design movement is inherently at odds with the artistic priorities. In reality, however, there is room for both aesthetic achievement and accessible experiences, as we reveal below.

Finding the Sweet Spot

Game artists and designers should clearly define and clarify a vision for their creative work, guided by the game’s narrative and a deeper sense of meaning. Within that vision, however, there is room for accessibility, especially from a visual standpoint. This effort may actually look quite similar to another balance designers need to strike, which is blending the artistic and functional components of the gaming experience. In both pursuits, customization options and environmental cues can make a world of difference, all while preserving desired aesthetics.

Examples of Seamless Integration

Many promising games prove that compelling visuals and accessibility can be achieved and that these qualities can actually amplify one another. Examples include:

  • Forza Horizon 5 (Playground Games). A multitude of different visual accessibility settings are available immediately upon beginning Forza Horizon 5, as the game tosses players right into the action without a standard opening menu screen. Best of all, these additions (such as colorblind sliders, high contrast mode, and larger in-game text) are blended seamlessly into the gameplay experience.
  • Apex Legends (Respawn Entertainment). Multiplayer games are often overlooked within the gaming accessibility movement, but that’s not the case with EA’s Apex Legends. Voice-to-chat text fills players in on squadmates’ conversations, with players also encouraged to explore numerous visual assist settings.
  • Minecraft (Mojang Studios). Minecraft is one of the most popular games of all time, thanks, in part, to its inherently accessible structure, which may be especially appealing to players with autism spectrum disorder or other sensory concerns. Players can download mods or tools such as Minecraft Access and TrueBlindCraft which may help navigate the entire game with relative ease.
  • Spider-Man: Miles Morales (Insomniac Games). Insomniac’s web-slinging masterpiece is one of the few games to feature a deaf character. She communicates via sign language, with options available to narrate the subtitled sign language. This thoughtful approach shows how far games have come in terms of accessibility features as well as representation.
  • Animal Crossing: New Horizons (Nintendo). Because Nintendo designs games to suit the largest audiences possible, these naturally feel more accessible than most. In Animal Crossing: New Horizons, everything is big, bold and bright, and sound design cues make interacting within the environment easier for those with visual impairments.

Future of Accessibility in Game Art

We are merely in the infancy of the gaming accessibility movement. The industry has come a long way, but many players still struggle to embrace the gaming experience. As new technologies become available, game artists and designers uncover new ways to reach a broader audience. That being said, new challenges can also be expected, especially as certain technological breakthroughs (such as virtual and augmented reality) introduce distinct accessibility concerns.

Trends in Inclusive Design

Exciting technologies promise to elevate inclusive design, allowing artists, designers and developers to bring ambitious accessibility goals to life. Among the most promising trends include:

  • Adaptive controllers. While many of the inclusive options highlighted above provide visual or auditory aids, some users may require additional assistance with their controllers. Thankfully, many excellent options have been released, along with several promising controllers in development. Microsoft’s Proteus Controller, for example, provides “snap and play” functionality and remappable buttons, accommodating one-handed gamers and players with many other disabilities.
  • Assistive AI. Offering everything from described visuals to enhanced voice controls, AI-driven features can elevate gameplay, overcoming previous limitations to help games feel both immersive and accessible. Moving forward, AI may shape accessibility features in games, although it will still be necessary for designers to maintain a focus on inclusivity throughout the entire design and development journey.

Encouraging Industry Standards

While many individual developers have demonstrated a clear commitment to promoting accessibility in gaming, unfortunately, this is not yet prioritized across the industry. Other developers cite a desire to improve accessibility in video games but struggle to make good on these intentions, often due to a simple lack of understanding or resources.

Industry standards could help resolve this, offering a blueprint to guide accessibility efforts. Accessibility-focused gamers and designers can advocate for expanded accessibility standards while also making an effort to abide by those already established via industry authorities such as the International Game Developers Association.
